Novels

All students must read at least a minimum of 20 minutes daily. In class whole novel studies allow for enriching discussion, help students develop comprehension of literature, and they begin a life long love for reading.

Usually a student reading at the 5th grade level can read a chapter or two a night depending on the length, however this can change depending on the students interest or lack there of the novel.

Even though there are assigned chapters to be read weekly the student may read ahead. It is important to teach and read at the flow the whole class is comfortable with, and this may vary depending on the novel.

ALL novels are discussed as a whole class daily. Sometimes we will even read ahead together. The students LOVE this time. They sit on the carpet with their novels and we discuss and read together as a whole group. This REALLY helps students develop a LOVE for reading.

JOURNALS WILL BE DONE IN CLASS

All students will be given a journal at the beginning of the novel. This will be their journal that they have to keep track of for the length the novel will be read. Students will answer literature questions that assess their comprehension, and will also do a creative assignment based around the novel. This might include an art project, comic, or possibly a children's story.
