Why is it RED?

During my trip to Armstrong Woods I learned that when you put a green pinecone in a tube of water for an hour or so, the water turns red. Some of you may be wondering why. This experiment also connects with the reaction of salt or sugar mixing with water. It dissolves. So when the red capsule in the pine cone gets wet it dissolves and turns red.
